Shipping containers for sale – what to buy

A shipping container is about the toughest, most secure storage you can buy for the money. They’re made from Corten steel, they lock up tight and they handle Australian weather without fuss. That’s why farmers, builders, tradies and home owners all over the country use them.

20ft containers are the most popular size – big enough for a household move or a workshop, small enough for most driveways. 40ft containers give you double the floor space for not much more money. 10ft containers fit tight spots, high cube containers add an extra 30cm of height, and side opening containers open up along the whole side.

Want to save? Our used shipping containers are B grade units that are still wind and water tight, from $2,399 for a 20ft.

Container homes for sale

Our container homes are built off site and trucked to you, so you can skip the long build. Choose from expandable houses that fold out to double their width, 40ft accommodation modules, granny flats, office blocks and compact pods.

They’re popular for farm workers’ accommodation, mine and construction camps, Airbnb cabins, home offices and as a place to live while the main house gets built. Prices start at $7,450 for a 3m office pod.

Backyard ready

Container pools

A shipping container pool gives you a finished pool in roughly the footprint of a 20ft container – about 6m x 2.4m. It’s built in a factory, delivered on a truck and craned into place, so you can be swimming in weeks rather than months.

Container pools can sit above ground, in ground or part in ground. Like any pool in Australia, you’ll need compliant fencing and usually council approval.

Container domes and shelters

Put two containers side by side, add a dome shelter on top and you’ve got a covered workshop or machinery shed for a fraction of the cost of a steel building. We sell 20ft and 40ft container domes, large double truss shelters up to 21m wide, backwalls, post kits and ground-mounted livestock shelters.

Straight talk

Why buy shipping containers for sale from MRF?

There are plenty of shipping containers for sale in Australia, and most of them look the same in a photo. The difference is what happens after you click buy. We list real prices, tell you honestly whether a used container suits your job, and quote freight based on your actual site – not a guess.

Every container we sell is wind and water tight with working doors. New containers are one-trip units with a lock box fitted. Used containers are B grade: sound and secure, with cosmetic marks. If you’re not sure which is right, tell us what you’re storing and we’ll point you to the best value option.

Because we hold shipping containers for sale at depots in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Albany WA, most customers are within reach of a yard. That keeps freight down and delivery times short. Further out? We deliver to regional and remote sites every week.

Not sure where to start?

Choosing the right shipping container

Four quick questions sort out most buying decisions. Answer these and you’ll know which container to look at.

  1. What are you storing?
Household gear, tools and stock fit easily in a 20ft. Machinery, vehicles and pallets usually need a 40ft. Tall items? Go for a high cube.
  2. How much room do you have?
Measure the spot and the path in for the truck. Tight backyards and driveways suit a 10ft or 20ft.
  3. New or used?
Pick new if it’s on show or being fitted out. A used B grade container is great value for farms, yards and building sites.
  4. How will you use it?
In and out every day? Try a side opening container. Need a covered work area? Add a dome shelter between two containers.

FAQs

Shipping container questions

How much does a shipping container cost in Australia?

Our new 10ft containers start at $1,780, a new 20ft shipping container is $2,999 and a new 40ft is $3,999. Used B grade containers start at $2,399 for a 20ft. High cube and side opening containers cost a little more. Freight is quoted separately to your postcode.

Do you deliver shipping containers Australia-wide?

Yes. We deliver to all states and territories, including regional and remote areas. You can also pick up from our depots in Sydney, Banyo (Brisbane), Sunshine (Melbourne) and Albany WA.

What’s the difference between new and used containers?

New (one trip) containers have made a single voyage and are in near-new condition. Used B grade containers are wind and water tight with working doors, but show dents, scratches and surface rust. Used is cheaper and perfect for farm and yard storage.

Do you sell container homes and container pools?

Yes. We sell expandable container homes, accommodation modules, office pods and a 20ft shipping container pool, all delivered Australia-wide.

Do I need council approval for a shipping container?

It depends on your council and how you use it. Temporary storage on rural land often needs nothing, but homes, pools and permanent structures usually need approval. Check with your local council first.

How do I pay?

Check out online or request a quote. We email a tax invoice and freight quote, you pay by bank transfer, and we lock in delivery once payment clears.
